Does My Child Qualify for the GAPP Program in Georgia?

If you’re a parent or guardian caring for a child with medical needs in Georgia, you may be wondering if your family qualifies for help through the GAPP program, and how to get started.

At Miralta Home Care, we speak with families every day across Atlanta, Fulton, Gwinnett, and surrounding counties who ask the same question:

“Does my child qualify for in-home care under GAPP?”

Here’s what you need to know.

What Is GAPP? (Quick Recap)

The Georgia Pediatric Program (GAPP) is a Medicaid-funded service that provides free in-home skilled nursing or personal care to medically fragile children under 21.

It’s designed to support families with children who:

  • Need ongoing nursing care

  • Are safer and more comfortable receiving care at home

  • Qualify under Georgia Medicaid guidelines

GAPP Eligibility: Who Qualifies?

To be eligible for GAPP, your child must meet three basic criteria:

  1. Age: Must be under 21 years old

  2. Medicaid: Must be enrolled in Georgia Medicaid (including through the Katie Beckett Waiver, if applicable)

  3. Medical Need: Must have a diagnosis or condition that requires skilled nursing or personal care in the home

What Medical Conditions Qualify a Child for GAPP?

GAPP doesn’t approve or deny based on a specific diagnosis. Instead, it looks at medical necessity. But here are some common conditions that may qualify:

  • Tracheostomy or ventilator dependence

  • Seizure disorders

  • Autism with behavioral/medical complications

  • Feeding tubes (G-tube or NG-tube)

  • Cerebral palsy

  • Severe developmental delays

  • Prematurity-related complications

  • Genetic syndromes

If your child needs help with things like respiratory monitoring, feeding, bathing, or medication management at home, you might qualify.
