How Do I Get Paid to Be My Child’s Caregiver in Georgia?
Caring for a child who is medically fragile or has a complex condition is a full-time job. In Georgia, some parents and family members are eligible to get paid for the care they already provide at home.
If you’ve ever asked:
"Can I get paid to care for my child with disabilities in Georgia?"
"Does Georgia Medicaid offer programs for parent caregivers?"
"How do I apply for the Family Caregiver option under GAPP?"
You’re not alone. Many families across Atlanta, Fulton County, Gwinnett, Cobb, and beyond are navigating the same questions. If this sounds confusing, don’t worry - we’ll help you understand every step of the process and be there with you.
At Miralta Home Care, we’ve guided hundreds of Georgia families through this exact process. We handle all the paperwork, coordinate with your doctor, and help you get qualified and trained at no cost, so you can focus on caring for your child, not chasing down forms.
What Is the Family Caregiver Program?
The Family Caregiver Program is an option under Georgia’s Medicaid-funded Georgia Pediatric Program (GAPP) that allows qualified family members (including parents, grandparents, and legal guardians) to be paid to provide care for a child with medical needs at home.
This is different from hiring a nurse from outside your family. In this model, you become the caregiver, and Miralta pays you directly for the care you give your child or relative. That means as along as you qualify for Medicaid, we can help you get on GAPP, and then guarantee you an hourly rate for basic medical care to help support your family.
Who Can Qualify?
Your child must:
Be under the age of 21
Be enrolled in Georgia Medicaid (or have a Katie Beckett Waiver)
Have a developmental delay or medical condition that requires in-home care (such as autism, palsy, tracheostomy, seizure disorder, G-tube feeding)
The caregiver (you) must:
Be a parent, guardian, or close relative
Complete required training through an approved provider (Miralta can help!)
Be included in the child’s care plan as the designated caregiver (we can also create a care plan for you)
In some cases, the caregiver can live in the same household as the child. Eligibility depends on the child’s medical needs and how GAPP evaluates the case.
What Services Do Family Caregivers Provide?
Once approved, family caregivers may help with:
Administering medication
Bathing, feeding, and hygiene
Seizure or respiratory monitoring
G-tube or trach care
Mobility assistance
Behavioral or developmental support
Miralta ensures every caregiver is trained and supported every step of the way, for no additional cost.
How to Apply (Step-by-Step)
We take care of the process from start to finish. You don’t need to navigate confusing forms or worry about missing requirements.
Step 1: Schedule a consultation
We’ll learn about your child’s needs and discuss your eligibility.
Step 2: Gather medical records
We coordinate with your doctor to obtain necessary documentation, including the Letter of Medical Necessity.
Step 3: We submit the application
Our team handles the GAPP paperwork and keeps you updated throughout the review process.
Step 4: Caregiver onboarding
If approved, you’ll go through a caregiver training process to prepare for your role.
Step 5: You begin providing care
Once approved and onboarded, you’ll begin caring for your child and receiving pay for the services you provide.
What If You Don’t Qualify?
If you’re not eligible for the Family Caregiver option, your child may still qualify for:
Professional in-home nursing through GAPP
Regular care visits from licensed pediatric nurses
Additional support services based on your child’s diagnosis
We’ll help you find the best available option, and we’ll do the work to make it happen.
